This work captures the view from the windswept top of Mt Sunday, in the Canterbury Plains of the South Island of New Zealand. From its summit, a soul-moving view opens up of the surrounding mountain ranges and the silver Rangitata River as it braids its way through the valley.
This work was inspired by that view. I wanted to capture the scale of this dramatic landscape, conveying the relationship between the looming, stormy sky and the vast, majestic vista, intrinsically linked as the threatening clouds cast deeply contrasting areas of shadow and light across the river, the valley and the mountain ranges.
